Priyanka Chopra Doesn't "Give a F*ck" About Nick Jonas's Exes: "I Don't Read My Book Backward"

Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra truly have a modern-day love story. The couple first connected on social media in 2016 when Jonas slid into Chopra's DMs. A few months later, the two finally met in person at the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty in February 2017, where Jonas admitted he dropped down on one knee to show Chopra how much he was already invested in her. "I put my drink down," he recalled in a December 2018 Vogue interview. "Get on one knee — this is in front of a bunch of people — and I say, 'You're real. Where have you been all my life?' Like, loud."

Chopra told the outlet that nothing romantic came of their night, in which they spent "hours" hanging out together. "We hung out for a couple of hours," she said. "He patted my back before he left." Beyond being a gentleman, Jonas had another good reason for not pursuing anything that night, explaining, "There was no kiss. There was nothing. She's still upset about that. . . . Your mom was in the house! I thought it was a respectful first night."

The pair had both been in previous relationships, with Jonas having been linked to Selena Gomez, Lily Collins, and numerous other major stars before settling down with Chopra. To this day, though, the pair are focused on looking forward, not back. Chopra opened up a bit about their relationship in an interview on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast on May 10, explaining that she does not "give a f*ck" about Jonas's previous relationships and that the couple were "talking about the future" from the moment their relationship began. "I don't read my book backward," she continued. "I believe you go forward in the chapters."

Fast-forward to today, Jonas and Chopra are married and parents to their daughter Malti Marie.

2017: Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra Meet

Despite Jonas's attempt to reach Chopra through her Twitter DMs in 2016, the two didn't officially meet until early 2017, although they did exchange texts for six months before meeting up. At that time, they were spotted together on multiple occasions, including at the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty.

During an interview on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast in March 2023, Chopra revealed the reason she was hesitant to connect with Jonas right away. She said, "I was in a tumultuous relationship at that time — this is [2016]. We had common friends who didn't want me to be in my relationship and were like, 'Oh, he's single, too. He's really not with that girl but he is.' It was complicated on both our ends."

Chopra further explained: "When Nick texted me in like [2016] and slid into my DMs and we started chatting, I was at the end of my last long relationship before Nick. So, I didn't want to engage as much at that time. I was also like 35. Nick was 25. I really put a stop on it in a way because I judged the book by the cover. I was like, 'I wanna settle down. I've been there, done the fun dating thing.'"

In her "Call Her Daddy" interview, Chopra said she needed time to reflect on her past relationships before diving into her romance with Jonas. Telling host Alexandra Cooper she was a "serial monogamist" before dating her future husband, Chopra recalled feeling like her relationships were "getting self-destructive" and realizing "I have to choose me.'" She then "took two years off" to reflect on why she kept acting as the "caretaker" in relationships before getting serious again.

In May 2017, Chopra and Jonas attended the Met Gala together, but according to Chopra, nothing romantic was going on between her and Jonas at the time. In fact, she told Jimmy Kimmel that they were bonded by the fashion designer who dressed them both. "We were both wearing Ralph Lauren, and we decided to go together," she shared. "We were on the same table and we already knew each other. So, he was like, 'Hey, you wanna go together?' And I was like, 'Yeah, OK, let's go together.' It ended up working out."

While their relationship didn't take off right away, Chopra shared that she definitely wasn't uninterested before Jonas swept her off her feet. Elsewhere in her "Call Her Daddy" interview, Chopra confessed that Jonas's "Close" music video had something to do with her agreeing to go out with him. "[I thought], 'That body deserves at least a date,'" she said. "I landed on that video. I saw it, and I had to, like, open the window or something."
