On the bus ride home the other day, a kind young stranger named Sin Wa Mow offered me her seat. She graciously got up as the two men seated beside her hardly looked up to see the sardines packing their way onto the vehicle. Crammed to maximum capacity, the lady remained chipper for the duration of the ride and even told me, "I normally wouldn't even subject myself to the discomfort of being tossed around on the express bus, let alone a mommy carrying a baby in her tummy. So let it weigh on the consciences of the other selfish MUNI passengers! I'm just more than happy to have been able to help someone out today. Thank YOU for that opportunity." I quickly told her about lilsugar and asked for her email address.
She emailed me a picture of herself in her happy place, which incidentally is not on a jam packed public bus. Cheers to Sin Wa for her selfless attitude and giving me and my babe her seat. We need more people like her in this world and on public transportation!

Post a CommentNo kidding. Yay for her and yay for you for thanking her and giving recognition to something that was so little for her, but meant so much to you.
I once saw an older lady yell at a man to give her his seat...he did.

bravo Sin Wa...leave it to the women to help each other out. men can seem so useless at times!

There's a visibly pregnant (8 months along) woman who regularly boards my crowded bus home and I swear, it's appalling day after day how few people make any effort to offer her a seat. I do offer, swear! I heard her talking to another woman recently and she said it's mostly women who offer her a seat, or men over 60.
I ride the same bus home and it is disturbing how many people selfishly hoard the seats for themselves while other needy people (pregnant women, the elderly, injured folk) are forced to either pipe up for a seat or cling on for dear life.
So glad there are still people in the world to set a good example!

I love happy stories - thank you for sharing!!!!
Wow this is crazy. I really would have assumed that more men would be willing to give up their sit. YAY for people like her!!! it is amazing how blind and selfish others can be.
I love to hear about these types of stories.

That's very sweet! Good for her!
And it really is true how selfish and inconsiderate people have become. At the risk of sounding sexist, whatever happened to gentlemen, those wonderful creatures who would give up their seat for a lady?

That is so nice to hear! I'm from San Francisco too, and I can remember picking my husband up from BART one night and he told me that there was a pregnant woman standing throughout the entire commute! He asked me if that happened while I was pregnant and I said "yes, all the time." He was so pissed! I guess at one point he even said out loud to the people sitting "You are really rude. You should let this woman sit." And still no one gave up a seat. I am teaching my kids to give up their seats for ANYONE that looks like they may need it (whether they are older, disabled, pregnant, etc.)

while I'm all for giving up a seat for those that could use a rest, I'm a bit put-off by your sense of entitlement to it..
Our buses here have stickers above the seats that say you're supposed to get up for anyone that's blind, pregnant, elderly, or disabled, and I find most people do.
I don't usually have a choice because I can never score a seat for myself to give up! haha
