Pregnancy often brings clumsiness along with it. I try my best to avoid precarious situations, but sometimes my body does its own thing. While flats typically make my legs look short and stubby, they usually afford me a level of comfort and agility.
The other day I sported a new pair of bright blue ballet flats to work and was feeling quite agile for a woman entering her last trimester. As I made my way down the San Francisco hills, I stepped on the smooth surface of an electrical cover and completely ate it. Both feet flew out from under me leaving my tush and hands to break the fall. Humiliated of course, I slowly pulled myself together and gingerly walked the rest of the way to the bus stop. Luckily, I got a seat and was able to lick my wounds.
I refuse to wear sneakers with a dress, but I'm not sure what other footwear would work if my flats aren't doing the trick. Combat boots?

Post a CommentI feel your pain! My doc ordered me to take off my 1" heels at 7 months pg but I'm already under 5ft. It's bad enough I can't reach anything with heels let alone without. It was painful but I had to suck it up and wear fugly flats. booo! It sounds like a good opportunity for shoe designers, comfy flats that look good. Hmm, what a concept. ;p
I have fallen so many times while pregnant (not this time... so far) Did you go to the doctor?? I really recommend it, because they baby could have turned in your belly. I think I wore heels up until the 8th month (not everyday). But try getting not so flat flats if that makes sense, or some with rubber soles. I am so scarred of getting bigger and clumsy, I fall down my stairs at least 3 times a year. so bad!
I'm really accident prone (although not pregnant) and something I've done in my flats or heels with smooth soles is take a knife and put a few cross hatches in there, just scratches, not penetrating or anything. It's supposed to stop you from going flying on smooth surfaces.
Puma's got some great ballet flats that have a grippy rubber sole... They might do the trick on those tricky manhole & electrical covers. Also, if you're cheap like me because you know you'll never wear them again once you have the baby, Lands' End just came out with some "Terrain Jane" Mary Janes & ballet flats that are more casual, but still grippy.
OMG, are you OK! So sorry to her you fell. I fell in train car. It was raining and their was a wet spot. I was 4 1/2 month pregnant.
I say a woman in her third trimester should be allowed to wear whatever shoes make her feel comfortable. And that included fuzzy slippers and heels.
I also biffed it a couple of times in pregnancy. Once was early on and I was bowling...I felt like a total fool. The second time was a little later in pregnancy and it was icy. That one kind of freaked me out because it was a really hard fall. I called the doctor...you may want to do the same.
I agree with kittyhill - try the puma's, or anything else with a grippy sole. It'll work wonders!

I'm a klutz who has spent a lot of time on the ground, but the San Francisco streets are such a mess that it's hard not to eat it even when you're wearing flats or sneakers. babysugar — what you need is a driver:)
Seriously?? I am just learning about this. My BFF had a big fall once a week for like a month as she entered her third trimester. I had no idea but figured it was pregnancy-related since she has been a jock with great balance her whole life.
